Most jobs today require working with a computer, and most computers fail at some point. If you’re tired of calling tech support for every little issue, here are some tips to become your own IT guy. Click below to find common problems and solutions for your IT woes.
Slow internet connection?
To find the REAL culprit of a slow or dead connection, try opening Google. If Google loads, the issue is likely with a specific webpage and not your internet.
If Google doesn’t load, you need to investigate why your connection failed. Here’s what you do:
- click on the START button
- go to Control Panel
- if you’re using Windows XP, click on Network Connections. For Windows Vista: go to Network and Sharing Center, then click View Status
What does it say there? If there’s an exclamation point saying “Limited connection”, try clicking “Repair” (or “Diagnose” for Windows Vista). If it says disconnection, the problem is probably with your internet service provider.
Your internet service provider may also be a problem if you have a router that says it’s connected, but you still can’t get online. The easiest way to fix this is to reset the power to everything, starting at the wall and going to your computer. This little trick is what IT guys call a “power cycle”. If that doesn’t solve your problem, you may need to call your service provider.
Computer Crashing?
The first thing your IT guy will tell you is to restart your computer. If a reboot doesn’t work, ask yourself “What’s different?” Think back to the time when your computer was working. Did you install something since then? Try uninstalling the program in question. If you’re still having trouble, it’s time to call IT support.
Pesky Pop-ups?
Before you enter “fix-it” mode, make sure your pop-up blocker is running. Internet Explorer has a pop-up blocker built in that you can access via the Tools menu.
If the pop-up blocker is on and you’re still getting those ads, then you probably have spyware. You can find a great, free tool to remove spyware at www.malwarebytes.org. Download this and run it once a week to remove those pesky pop-ups.
Got a virus?

If your computer is telling you it has a virus and to click for a free scan, then it is already too late- that message warning you IS the virus, and if you click it, you will infect your PC with even more viruses. You’ll need to run an anti-virus software like Kapersky to rid your PC of the infection.
Odd error code?
If a window pops up with an error code or strange message, write down EXACTLY what it says, then google it. Odds are, someone else has gotten a similar message and can help you find a solution.
