I hear Best Buy contracts out this sort of work, which makes me wonder what (if any) screening occurs beforehand... This sorta thing happens more than it should. Yes, it's easier for the tech to just swap out PCs instead of addressing the real issues. Is it right? Of course not. But it happens. Most people aren't comfortable tinkering with their own PCs, so they trust others to take care of it, for as little as possible... so of course, the "techs" who do this sorta work for next to nothing are worth that too :P

for the most part they do not fix anything.
I would guess more likely that they just toss the whole laptop and just say they replaced the hard drive.

I have fixed pc's that they have worked on.
they left the hard drive unplugged and then sold a whole new pc to the person. lol

the real question is why would somebody buy anything from a company that is only out to sell and not actually offer any real support...

or better yet why would somebody have a computer repaired by somebody making next to nothing per hour? lol

for $90 you can get a really nice program to back up your whole machine to another pc or external hard drive. dont think a big store will ever care anything about the little guy.

Never underestimate the power of large corporations to scam you out of large sums of money...
Sadly, this is only one of many scams going on too. One woman in D.C. filed a $54 million lawsuit against Best Buy. Does anyone else know of similar lawsuits being filed? Best Buy shouldn't be able to get away with this...

Best Buy definately has a data recovery scam going on. I know of 2 people in the last few weeks that have taken their perfectly fine old computer in to Best Buy to have their data transferred to their new computer. Both people were told that their hard drives were damaged and would need to be sent off for recovery for a minimum of $500. When they declinded and picked up their previously working computer, it wouldn't even boot with a message that the primary hard drive is missing. I am going to look at one of these computers this week to see if BB pulled some sleezy crap like disconnecting the hard drive, or worse, wiping it to promote their data recovery services. You can bet that if I can prove this, I will be trying my hardest to bring Best Buy down.
