IT Heat Advisory

Due to extremely high outdoor temperatures which are forecast to continue throughout this week, cooling capacity has been reached in many office buildings throughout the Puget Sound region.

If your building’s air conditioning cannot keep up with these hot temperatures, you may experience heat load problems with your computer servers. There are several proactive measures that can be taken to help reduce heat loads. If you have rising temperatures in your building, we ask that you take the following measures to help:

  • Turn off all non-essential computer equipment (printers, unused PCs).
  • Open the door to the computer server room and place a fan where it can exhaust air out of the room.
  • Turn off all non-essential lights including floor lamps.
  • Close all window blinds on South and West sides of your buildings.

Server/Network Impact

Servers do not work with excessive heat. If they reach excessively high temperatures, they may automatically shut down. Older servers, or ‘home made’ servers, may not have this auto-shutdown capability.

Responza has monitoring software that will indicate excessive temperatures on your servers. If we receive an alert, we will respond immediately.

If you have any concerns about the heat in your computer room, call your IT Manager or Responza at (206) 762-5100.
